Holika Dahan has a Hindu mythological story behind its origin and multiple legends associated with its origins, the most famous being the story of Prahlad and Holika. According to Hindu mythology, Prahlad, a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu, was persecuted by his father, the demon king Hiranyakashipu, who opposed Vishnu worship.

Hiranyakashipu’s sister, Holika, had a boon that made her immune to fire, so she attempted to burn Prahlad by sitting with him in flames. However, Prahlad remained unharmed while Holika perished due to the divine intervention of the incarnation of Lord Krishna- the Narasimha avatar. This event symbolizes the victory of good over evil and is commemorated by burning a bonfire, known as Holika Dahan, on the eve of Holi.
